Smart Phone Ground Control Stations

As an alternative to Mission Planner on a PC, a ground control station can be set up on a smart phone. An OTG cable is required to connect the smart phone to telemetry antenna and one of the many phone applications is all that is needed.

Smart Phone & OTG Cable

The smart phone I use is a Motorola G4 Plus with operating system Android 7.0.

To connect your smart phone to the 3DR telemetry antenna (this one is 915MHz), an OTG cable is needed.

I sourced mine from here.

(Note: This is the cable, not the adapter.)

I mounted the assembly on a sheet of 2mm three ply using self adhesive hook & loop tape. The antenna can be rotated to your preferred angle. If the phone is held at a 45 degrees and the antenna is at 45 degrees, the antenna becomes vertical.

Alternatively, the assembly can be used in ‘portrait’ orientation. The antenna can still be rotated to a vertical position.

Smart Phone Application – Mission Maker

On the phone, turn on mobile data.

Plug in the OTG cable and the 3DR telemetry antenna. The green LEDS on the 3DR transmitter and receiver modules flash.

Power up the aircraft. The green LEDs on the 3DR transmitter and receiver modules become steadily on.

Run Mission Maker. Click ‘Connect’ and when connected, telemetry data is displayed over a map on the screen.
