Aircraft Layout and Operation

Airframe Hardware Layout

Hardware is laid out as shown in this photo.

Weight is distributed so that equal weight is on the left and right of the centre line of the aircraft.

A vacuum formed fairing holds the telemetry transmitter to the top of the fuselage.

The pixhawk, receiver, auxiliary BEC and Schottky diode module are mounted on a perforated phenolic board secured by two screws on either end.

The battery slides into a vacuum formed tray below pixhawk and is secured by one band of hook/loop tape.

 

Wiring Diagram

The Pixhawk is connected as described in the wiring diagram below

 

The SBUS output of the X6R receiver provides 8 control channels into the RCIN port of the Pixhawk.

Power to the Pixhawk

The Pixhawk FMU is powered by a power module.

The Pixhawk outputs are powered by 2 voltage regulators. One regulator is the BEC in the ESC. The second regulator is provided by another BEC for redundancy. They feed the Pixhawk via the Schottky Diode Module which also monitors the health of each BEC with LEDs. Before each flight, check that both LEDS are on.

Zener Diode Module

A 5.7V zener diode is connected across the outputs power supply bus. This is to prevent spikes on this bus exceeding 5.7V.

The zener diode module is plugged into an unused output.

Schottky Diode Module

The Schottky Diode Module allows one or both 5V power supplies to power the Pixhawk outputs and the X6R receiver. It is built on a piece of veroboard.

Before flight, check both LEDs are on to ensure both power supplies are working.

Safety Switch Operation

The LED in the safety switch has the following operation.

When the LED indicates the system is ready, Press the safety switch for 5 seconds to enable outputs.

To disarm, press and hold the switch until the light flashes. (5 seconds)
