Flight 001 - Mode Tests : Manual, Stabilise & Training Modes

 

This flight demonstrates the following autopilot modes.

  • Manual mode flight,
  • Stabilise mode (Fly By Wire) flight, and
  • Training mode flight.

This shows all the sections of the entire flight. The display changes colour when the APM changes mode. As shown on the file tree at the left, the aircraft took off in Manual (orange), changed to FBW (yellow), changed to Training (green), then changed to Manual again (blue).

 

 

Each section of the display can be turned on or off by clicking the check box in the file tree at the left.

 

 

The aircraft took off in Manual mode (orange).

 

 

The mode was then changed to FBW (yellow). (‘Fly By Wire’ or ‘Stabilise’). With thumbs off the sticks so they are centred, the aircraft flies straight and level by itself

 

 

The mode was then changed to Training mode (green). The roll and pitch are limited. This shows the maximum climb rate limited to +20° and the maximum descent rate limited to - 25°.

 

 

The mode was then changed to Manual again (blue). The aircraft is fully manouvreable. There is one section where the aircraft did a loop. Because the aircraft was upside down, it lost GPS data so there is a gap in the display. The GPS data quickly recovered after the loop. The aircraft then descended to land.

This is a graph of the altitude in meters (red) and the pitch (green) during the flight. It also shows the duration of the flight and the modes.

When the aircraft was taking off in Manual mode, the pitch was about +40°. Later when the aircraft was ascending in Training mode, the pitch was limited to +20°. During descent, however, the pitch did fall below the limiting value of -25° for a short time.

At about line 16500 where the aircraft did a loop, the pitch first decreased while the aircraft did a short dive to increase airspeed, then increased toward +90° then flipped to -90°. The aircraft exited the loop a few meters lower than the entry altitude.
